Comparison

KPV vs Melanotan II

KPV is healing & repair; Melanotan II is melanocortins. They are compared here because they are frequently considered against each other, not because they act alike.

On published evidence alone, Melanotan II is the better documented of the two (preliminary human). That is a statement about the state of the literature, not a recommendation.

KPV

KPV is the terminal three residues of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It retains the parent hormone anti-inflammatory activity, apparently by entering cells and interfering with NF-κB and MAPK signalling to reduce proinflammatory cytokine production, but it does not activate melanocortin-1 receptors and therefore does not cause tanning. Most research is in inflammatory bowel models, where oral and rectal delivery have been examined.

Melanotan II

Melanotan II is a cyclic lactam analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that activates melanocortin receptors non-selectively, including MC1R, MC3R and MC4R. MC1R activation drives melanogenesis and tanning; MC4R activation produces the appetite suppression and the erectile effects that led to the development of the selective derivative bremelanotide. Non-selectivity is precisely the problem: users cannot obtain one effect without the others, and health agencies in several countries have issued warnings about unregulated supply and about melanoma risk from darkening existing naevi.

KPV vs Melanotan II: common questions

What is the difference between KPV and Melanotan II?

KPV is healing & repair and Melanotan II is melanocortins, so they act on different pathways. KPV: The C-terminal tripeptide of alpha-MSH, which keeps the anti-inflammatory activity without the pigmentation effects. Melanotan II: A non-selective melanocortin agonist that causes tanning, appetite suppression and erections. Subject of repeated regulatory warnings.

Which has stronger evidence, KPV or Melanotan II?

Melanotan II has the stronger evidence base (preliminary human, about 6 human studies) compared with KPV (animal models only).

Are KPV and Melanotan II FDA approved?

Neither is FDA approved for any indication.
