The best nootropic peptides, and where the Russian data stands

Most peptide nootropics are Russian pharmaceuticals with registration there and little Western trial data. That is not nothing, but it is not the same as an FDA approval, and the ranking reflects it.

How we ranked these Evidence level first. Registration as a medicine in any jurisdiction counts for more than vendor claims, and for less than a controlled Western trial. Full criteria in our methodology.

Quick answer

#CompoundClassEvidenceReported rangeStatus
1 Cerebrolysin Nootropic & neuro Clinical trials 5-30 g Research only
2 Semax Nootropic & neuro Preliminary human 300-900 mcg Research only
3 Selank Nootropic & neuro Preliminary human 250-750 mcg Research only
4 N-Acetyl Semax Amidate Nootropic & neuro Anecdotal only 100-300 mcg Research only

The ranking

01

Cerebrolysin

Clinical trials Nootropic & neuro Research use only

Approved across Europe and Asia for dementia and stroke, with around forty clinical trials. A porcine brain hydrolysate rather than a defined molecule. The most clinically documented compound on this list by a wide margin.

Evidence~40 human studies
Reported range5-30 g
Half-lifeNot established (mixture)
Banned in sportNo

Material for this compound is sold for laboratory research only. It is not manufactured, tested or labelled for human administration.

CCerebrolysin
02

Semax

Preliminary human Nootropic & neuro Research use only

On the Russian essential medicines list for stroke and cognitive disorders. An ACTH fragment analog that raises BDNF. Western trial data is limited, but it is a registered pharmaceutical with a defined mechanism.

Evidence~8 human studies
Reported range300-900 mcg
Half-life~30 minutes (intranasal)
Banned in sportNo

Material for this compound is sold for laboratory research only. It is not manufactured, tested or labelled for human administration.

SSemax
03

Selank

Preliminary human Nootropic & neuro Research use only

Registered in Russia as an anxiolytic without sedation or dependence. Modulates enkephalin metabolism. Six small human trials. The best-documented peptide for anxiety rather than cognition specifically.

Evidence~6 human studies
Reported range250-750 mcg
Half-life~30 minutes (intranasal)
Banned in sportNo

Material for this compound is sold for laboratory research only. It is not manufactured, tested or labelled for human administration.

SSelank
04

N-Acetyl Semax Amidate

Anecdotal only Nootropic & neuro Research use only

Acetylated and amidated Semax, plausibly longer-acting. The potency claims trace to vendor marketing, not to any published comparison. It ranks on being Semax, not on being better than it.

EvidenceNo human trials
Reported range100-300 mcg
Half-life~1-2 hours
Banned in sportNo

Material for this compound is sold for laboratory research only. It is not manufactured, tested or labelled for human administration.

NN-Acetyl Semax Amidate

What we left out, and why

Dihexa
The seven-orders-of-magnitude BDNF comparison is an in vitro rodent figure. No human trial has been published. c-Met activation is a theoretical tumour concern.
P21
Preclinical only.
Pinealon
Single research group, not independently replicated.
