Are SARMs legal in the US?
No SARM is FDA-approved, and FDA says SARMs cannot be legally marketed in the US as a dietary supplement or drug. FDA has issued warning letters to sellers, including six of seven bodybuilding-product warning letters in 2025. SARMs are also prohibited for service members and banned in sport by WADA.
Do SARM products contain what the label says?
Often not. A 2017 JAMA study of 44 products sold online as SARMs found 52% contained a SARM, 39% contained another unapproved drug, 25% contained unlisted substances, 9% contained no active compound, and 59% had amounts that differed substantially from the label.
How many people use SARMs?
There is no national US prevalence estimate. A systematic review estimates 1% to 3% of athletes use SARMs. In an April 2026 UK survey of 16 to 25 year olds, 33% said they had bought SARMs after seeing them on social media.
What are the side effects of SARMs?
FDA lists heart attack, stroke, psychosis, liver damage including acute liver failure, infertility and testicular shrinkage among the risks. A 2023 systematic review found 15 case reports of SARM-related liver injury, and in an Australian case series 17 of 23 patients with liver injury from SARMs, steroids or bodybuilding supplements were hospitalized.
Do SARMs show up in drug tests?
Yes, in anti-doping testing. WADA reported 62 adverse analytical findings for LGD-4033 in 2019, the highest number reported up to that point, and SARM findings had risen over the preceding five years.
